Few jobs feel as professional as hanging a shelf that sits perfectly level and holds firm for years. The good news is that it takes only a handful of tools and a little care. Here is the method I use on every shelf, from a light bathroom rack to a heavy run of books.
Find the Right Fixings
The wall decides everything. On solid masonry you will want wall plugs and screws, while a plasterboard wall needs proper cavity fixings rated for the weight. Never trust the small plugs that come bundled with cheap brackets for anything you care about.
Mark and Level
- Hold the shelf where you want it and mark the top edge lightly in pencil.
- Use a spirit level to draw a true horizontal line, then mark your fixing points along it.
- Double-check the measurements before you reach for the drill.
Drill and Fix
Drill on the marks using the correct bit for your fixings, then tap in the plugs and drive the screws home until the bracket sits snug but not crushed. Hang the shelf, check it once more with the level, and adjust before you load it. A two-minute check now saves a row of fallen books later.
Get into this routine and a once-daunting job becomes a five-minute task you can do with confidence anywhere in the house.
